Mis on „Independent Foreign Fiction Prize“?

See on iga-aastane auhind kaasaegse romaani või novellikogu tõlke eest inglise keelde Suurbritannias. Auhind loodi Briti ajalehe The Independent poolt 1990. aastal. Preemiaga auhinnatakse raamatu autorit ja selle tõlkijat. 1996-2001 auhinda välja ei antud. 2011 võttis auhinna jagamise üle „Booktrust“, kuid auhinna nimesse jäeti „Independent“. Auhinna on saanud näiteks 1991. aastal Milan Kundera, Immortality (Czech, Peter Kussi), Milan Kundera; 2002 W.G. “The End of Days” on lugu 20. sajandist, mida jälgitakse läbi ühe naise mitme võimaliku elukäigu. Lahkudes sajandivahetusel ühest väikesest Galiitsia linnast kulgeb ta tee läbi sõjaeelse Viini ja Stalini-aegse Moskva tänapäeva Berliini. Sündmustik areneb mitut rada mööda: vastavalt sellele, kuidas määrab juhus, saatus ja ajalugu. Romaan koosneb nagu viiest erinevast raamatust, igaüks neist viib nimetu kangelanna erinevasse surma. Esimene osa algab lapse surmaga 20. sajandi alguse Hapsburgide Impeeriumis. Kuid see ei ole lõpp, vaid hoopis algus. Järgmises osas kasvab laps Viinis, kuid tema veider suhe ühe poisiga viib järjekordse surmani. Järgmises stsenaariumis elab ta üle noorukiea ning kolib koos abikaasaga Venemaale. Mõlemad on pühendunud kommunistid, kuid meie kangelanna saadetakse töölaagrisse. Viimases osas jääb ta ellu, kolib tagasi Berliini ning temast saab kirjanik.

Raamat on bestseller Saksamaal ning on juba võitnud Hans Fallada auhinna Saksamaal.

• It almost never happens that I give up on a book. Yet that is what I have just done. This novel has all the ingredients which I would normally like – an East German author, and eastern European perspective, and a highly original and intriguing plot. Yet I have found it really hard going. To be honest I simply could not follow what was happenning in Book 3. I didn’t know who was talking when or exactly where or when it was set. I quite enjoyed Book 1 , but in Book 2, set in Vienna, I started to feel confused. Book 3 became almost completely baffling. This is probably all my own fault, but on the other hand if I had found any of the characters true to life or sympathetic in any way then I would have probably persevered.
